HANNAH SHAW, viola

Winner of numerous prizes and awards, violist Hannah Shaw performs regularly throughout the eastern United States, including performances in Alice Tully, Merkin, and Severance Halls. She has performed throughout Europe, with chamber music appearances in Italy, Switzerland, Great Britain, and The Netherlands, and was selected by the Oberlin Conservertory to represent the school in their 2006 tour of China. She has also served as principal violist of the Juilliard and Oberlin orchestras. Hannah was recently invited to perform on a new recording of the viola music of Benjamin Dale, released on the Dutton Epoch label.


Deeply committed to new music, Ms. Shaw was a member of the solo quartet in one of the first US performances of Harrison Birtwistle’s “Pulse Shadows”, which was coached by Mr. Birtwistle, and has participated in numerous premieres of solo and chamber music works as a member of the New Juilliard Ensemble and Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble.


Ms. Shaw has participated in many music festivals around the world, including Kneisel Hall, Casalmaggiore International Festival, Meadowmount School of Music, Quartet Program, and Juilliard’s Focus! Festival. She has participated in coaching and master classes led by Anner Bylsma, Joel Krosnick, Ronald Copes, Laurie Smukler, Lynn Chang, Heidi Castleman, Charles Castleman, Karen Ritscher, and members of the Orion, Ying, and Takacs quartets.


Ms. Shaw received her Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory where she was a Kappa Phi Lambda candidate and studied with Roger Chase. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at The Juilliard School where she is the recipient of the Irene Diamond Graduate Fellowship and studies with Samuel Rhodes, violist of the Juilliard Quartet.
